What is "outdoor counselling for the earth soul"?
My approach begins with earth as a co-therapist, and the knowledge that you already have access to all the wisdom you need to move through this current moment. Sometimes all we need is support to develop the muscle of listening and receiving the wisdom within us, within earth, and within our souls. Often there are also blocks, traumas, patterns, or simply everyday living that gets in the way of us remembering our innate wisdom. So my intention is to hold a nurturing space for you to bear-witness to what's present, and move towards your innate wholeness.

To do this, I blend on a variety of modalities:
  • Eco-therapy and outdoor therapy: “The earth is the co-therapist, offering strength, wisdom, and connection. Our healing is also collective healing for the earth. Plus, being outside is just good for our physiology.”
  • Somatic awareness: “Emotions and experiences can be stored in our body, and awareness and movement can help shift these.”
  • Presencing / Collective Trauma Witnessing: “The act of bearing witness and being witnessed is, in itself, a transformative act”
  • Creative expression and play: “Creative playfulness helps by-pass our "rational" problem-creating/problem-solving minds, opening up new pathways for connection and transformation. Playfulness is a doorway into presence, and can remind us of our innate joy and wonder at being”
  • Sound therapy (harp/flute/voice) “Sound holds space for us to journey inwards. Sound vibration helps us release.”
  • Ho'oponopono, a traditional Ha'waian process (taught to me by Kumu Pa'a Kawika Foster): “Over our lifetime, we all pick up pahakus (stones) that block our bowl of innate light. When we are ready, all we need to do is tip upside down our bowl of light. Ho’oponopono is a profoundly simple process of forgiveness and release.”

I offer a free intro call for folks who'd like to some more information, or to get to know me more, before booking a session.
Who is this for?
There are a wide range of reasons why people might choose to work with me. For example, you might be –
  • curious to deepen your earth connection
  • experiencing a tough emotional / mental-health time
  • desiring a moment of held stillness
  • looking for support through grief/grieving (of any kind)
  • someone who loves moving their body, loves being outside, or finds the thought of sitting in a psychologist's office strange.
  • experiencing eco-grief/eco-anxiety/eco-depression
  • would like support through a life transition
  • are processing trauma/traumatic experiences – note: I can offer support working through trauma, but for complex traumas I recommend we form a treatment team with an appropriate psychologist.
  • are called to expand into your most-whole self

What will I experience in a session?
At the beginning of your first session we'll find a nice bush patch to sit in, and talk about the background bits. I’ll also gather some details around what's happening for you now, and any history I need to be aware of. You can also share if there's a way of working you're more drawn to.

During the session, we’ll create a safe and sacred container to follow where you need to go. This could involve:
  • talking while sitting in the bush
  • talking while walking through the bush
  • guided earth connection practices
  • body/sensory focusing practice,
  • ritual and ceremony,
  • sitting and being outside
  • exploring through the bush
  • playfulness (the grown-up version of "nature-play")
  • a longer hike
Whatever we end up doing, we'll be finding pathways for you to share what's happening for you right now, and moving towards a place of clearness and clarity in your being.

Where are sessions?
All sessions take place in an easy-to-access bush reserve around nipaluna/Hobart.

I recommend our first session is at Cartwright Point Reserve, Sandy Bay.
This beautiful area has options to: be in an small quiet parkland with big gums, take a (short and slippy) track down to the ocean, or head into the forest along the start of the Truganini track.
Please Note: there are no toilets at Cartwright Point. The closest toilets are Long Beach, Sandy Bay, or Taroona Beach.

Once we've gotten to know each other, we can choose different bush reserves, such as Ridgeway Reserve or Kingston/Taroona beaches.

Directions / Parking for Cartwright Point:
  • Park at the Helios Coffee Van/ Truganini Track parking area in Sandy Bay.
    • Google Maps should find "Helios Coffee Van". NB: searching for Truganini Track on Google Maps might direct you to Mt Nelson, the wrong suburb!
  • Our meeting point is 2 minutes walk from this parking area:
    1. Cross the road, and walk in the direction of Hobart ("left", if you're facing the road)
    2. Walk along the pavement for ~1 min – you're aiming for the BIG gum tree.
    3. At the first driveway (and the big gum tree), there's a red sign saying "Cartwright Point Reserve" – this is it!
    4. I'm just inside the fence, underneath the second big gum tree!
Please note
nipaluna's bush reserves are very close to the city, but they can have a remote feel to them. The tracks are often narrow, we might walk off-track over uneven ground, and there can be insect encounters and unexpected weather changes. This is often what makes outdoor counselling so powerful; the environment frequently offers us the adventure and unexpected insights we need in the moment.

However, if any of this feels uncomfortable to you, please let me know and we can absolutely find a spot that suits your particular needs.
How long are sessions?
Sessions are 1.5 hours in an outdoor location within nipaluna/Hobart.
However I recommend giving yourself plenty of spaciousness after our session to go slow and integrate.
Cost?
1.5 hour session
Full Price: $110
Concession: $90

What about the weather?
Yep, nipaluna/Hobart can get wild, wet, and windy. Encountering the wildness of the weather can often be a really beautiful part of outdoor therapy. So I like to run sessions in most weather conditions.

However, your comfort is the most important thing. So, we do sometimes need to reschedule an appointment due to weather. Often we might need to move our meeting location to a more comfortable spot. I'll normally check-in with you before making this call.
What Do I need to bring?
  • Water bottle
  • Any medications you need (e.g. epipen, asthma inhaler)
  • Snack, if you'll want one during / after our session
  • Clothes that are comfortable to be outdoors in (NB we might choose to sit on the ground)
  • Comfy shoes
  • Hat / sunnies / sunscreen
  • Wet weather gear (e.g. rain jacket – best to pack one if you're unsure!). I will also have a few spare wet weather / warm clothing items for emergencies.
  • Journal or integration tool for afterwards, if you like

I live, work, and play on the stolen lands of the muwinina/palawa/pakana peoples in nipaluna, lutruwita/truwanna (so-called Hobart, Tasmania). I acknowledge that genocide is ongoing, and sovereignty has never been ceded. I acknowledge the sacredness of this land, and pay deepest respects to the past, present, and emerging custodians of these lands and waters. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
